Casual Catered Backyard Wedding

With the popularity of downsized backyard weddings making such a comeback, I thought I’d share some of the details from an event I did last summer. When an old friend asked me to cater her upcoming wedding reception I was so honoured. Sam & Rick wanted a down to earth casual affair which completely reflects them as a couple. The venue was their beautiful property in a quaint lakeside community and was the perfect place for them to host 60 of their favourite people.

The deck off of the house was set up for the romantic ceremony and with all of the giant mature trees, it felt like a tree house. After the touching exchange of vows the guests went down into the stunning yard to mingle and enjoy cocktails and appetizers.

The menu was planned with a few things in mind including favourites of the bride and groom. Favourite or cultural foods are such a great way to add custom touches to a party menu. Another thing we always consider is the oven capacity at the venue kitchen. In this case we were using a standard oven, so we needed to make sure that not everything had to be served hot. In fact with most events I have done is the case, so we implemented a station with chafers, staggering the warm foods with an early tray pass and filling the menu with cold and warm items.

Right after the ceremony we started off with a tray pass of these adorable fish & chip cones. We wrapped bamboo cones in newspaper parchment, added a chippy fork, a side of malt vinegar and a cutie little Union Jack 🇬🇧 , all a nod to the Bride’s British heritage.

  • We kept the Mac & Cheese hot in chafers and served it in take out boxes that were decked out with personalized labels
Creating stations is a great way to get your guests moving through the space. We had this Mac & Cheese Station set up in the lower part of the yard while we were setting up the upper deck for the buffet set up.

Treehouse vibes
Sam and Rick didn’t want to go overboard with desserts. Each of their children picked a sweet and we made them mini for the guests.
This simple and rustic vanilla cake was layered with lemon curd and frosted with whipped buttercream. They kept the cake and enjoyed it with champagne after the wedding 🤍
